Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you source your specimens?
Insects
Sometimes, we are fortunate enough to stumble upon them locally after their natural passing. This is the only way I source bees and local pollinators. We also receive contributions from our friends and family. Other times, we acquire them from trusted insect suppliers, breeders and importers who source their specimens from aviaries and farms dedicated to studying these remarkable insects.
These aviaries serve as important hubs for scientific research. When the insects in these aviaries reach their adult stage, they are released back into the wild, where they can contribute to the overall well-being and growth of the indigenous populations. However, not all insects are released. Some find their permanent home in a butterfly house, where they provide them with a safe and nurturing environment for the remainder of their lives. Working with these suppliers gives us the opportunity to work with specimens from all over the world.
Taxidermy
The animals I work with for taxidermy have all passed prior to me handling them, ensuring that no harm is done in the making of my art. Most of the mice, rats & rabbits I use are frozen feeder specimens that I purchase from a trusted and humane supplier. As for the ducklings and chicks, they come from certified farms right here in South Carolina. Sadly, these little ones failed to thrive, but I feel honored to have the chance to preserve their fragile beauty. I also receive contributions from a local Wildlife Rehab Center when they have animals that are unable to survive. By preserving these animals, I hope to bring joy and appreciation for many years to come!
Bats
I do not work with any bats in any way shape or form. They cannot be sourced responsibly or ethically. Many bats that are offered for sale are threatened or endangered species, and consumers driving demand for these bats only further puts the animals at risk of extinction. Unlike insects that generally have a shorter lifespan and can breed in the thousands, bats are mammals with an average lifespan of 30 years in the wild. They do not breed in great numbers - with a gestation period of six weeks to six months depending on the species, there is no sustainable or ethical way of breeding enough bats in captivity for the sheer number that is seen in taxidermy.
How should I care for my nature art?
Please be mindful that your one-of-a-kind nature art is organic and fragile. Be sure to keep your specimen out of direct sunlight or any room that may have increased humidity and be sure to handle with care.

Turnaround Time
Once specimen is received, turnaround time can range from 2 weeks - 12 months. Time is dependent on multiple factors (i.e.: specimen and time availability, dry/cure time, etc.) A more accurate turnaround time can be given once we discuss your project(s). As a friendly reminder, Southern Curiosities is a small venture that is solely run by me, ensuring that every piece created is infused with love, respect, and dedicated time. With great passion, I not only craft unique items for this platform, but I also curate specialized pieces for local markets throughout the year. This allows me to connect with the community on a more personal level, showcasing the beauty and charm of Southern artistry.

How to store until pickup/delivery can be arranged
Insects: If freshly passed, store in a non-crushable container (i.e. Tupperware/Glad container) in your freezer until we can arrange for an in-person visit or delivery. If the insect is already dried out, store in a non-airtight, non-crushable container. If the container is airtight, there is a likelihood of your specimen molding.
Mammals/Small Animals: For all mammals, fowl or other small animals, double bag them in freezer bags and safely store them in the freezer. Please note, if you are out of town and plan to deliver the frozen animal to me, it will need to be in an insulated box with either multiple ice packs or dry ice and sent next day air to me. If the specimen defrosts during the shipment, bacteria could get into the hide and slippage will likely occur and it will not be viable for taxidermy. If you are local to the Columbia, SC area, local pickup can be arranged — please transport in a cooler.
how much do your pieces cost?
You can click here to view a price list. all prices listed are estimates. Prices vary depending on specimen availability, market prices as well as time invested into each piece.
