About Us
Southern Curiosities is nestled in the quaint town of Irmo, South Carolina and is a mixture of creativity and admiration for the natural world. Specializing in entomology art and whimsical taxidermy — Southern Curiosities preserves the beauty of nature in shadow boxes, terrariums, and upcycled vintage displays. Every specimen and all botanicals used are sustainably sourced, honoring their lives even after they have passed from this world. Inspiration comes from the timeless elegance of Victorian taxidermy, the works of Walter Potter and the incorporation of the beauty of Mother Nature.
The Artist
Hi! My name is Jessica, and I’m the creator behind Southern Curiosities! From my humble beginnings in the enchanting woods of Michigan's Upper Peninsula to being raised amidst the captivating landscape of the South's diverse nature, my love for the outdoors and the beauty of all living things has always been ingrained within me. At my core, I’ve always been an artist and I try to bring creativity to everything I do. As a child, I dabbled in every form of art I could get my hands on — from painting, to sewing, to creating puppets and everything in between. In 2019, I embarked on a personal journey of self-teaching the art of pinning insects, which eventually led me to venture into starting my own nature art business in 2020. The fusion of my appreciation for nature with my love for artistic expression and creative pursuits felt like a match made in heaven. And so, in the Spring of 2023, Southern Curiosities bloomed into a full-time endeavor allowing me to fully pursue my passion.
Every piece I create is a harmonious mingling of whimsy and artistry — where the enchantment of nature blends with the occasional touch of fun and quirkiness. Each creation is infused with a deep appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
